Timothy's Story

On April 8th 2005 a young man entered Youth Care & Beyond, Inc.; head down, eye contact with no one, and indistinct mumbles for
conversation.  The epitome of a grunge skater, Timothy's demeanor and actions indicated that he did not care about anything,
least of all rules and regulations of a group home. Conversations with Timothy were usually one sided.  His response to questions
would be one or two words, a head nod or shoulder shrug.  At times it seemed as though he was playing charades; pointing and
signing for things he wanted.  Timothy was given target skills to work on throughout his stay with Youth Care, including following
rules and instructions, talking with others, initiating conversation, and academic success.

About a month after Timothy arrived, he began having conversations with his peers and was even witnessed smiling.  Although
Timothy was doing better with his peer and staff interactions, he still was uncomfortable with strangers and the large family setting.
After focusing on his social skills in unfamiliar situations, Timothy began to engage in more conversations.  Five months after being
with Youth Care, it was apparent that Timothy was focusing on his target skills and was exercising them at appropriate times.  He
was consistently a positive role model for his peers, encouraging them to follow rules and accept consequences that they earned.
He soon earned and maintained staff's trust.

On his own, Timothy was initiating conversations with staff and peers.  He started to include others in his interests by playing his
music and skateboarding with staff and peers.  Timothy's stay at Youth Care was becoming less and less necessary and He was
told he would be leaving shortly.  This young man who entered the home just 7 months ago was homeward bound.  Years later
Timothy continues to make the right choices in life and employ the skills he learned while at Youth Care, ensuring his long-term
success.
Maryann's Story

Maryann was adopted into a large family.  Although she has several siblings,  none were allowed near her due to a restraining order to
protect Maryann. Maryann worked very hard at her job but saw very little of her paycheck. Her mother took care of her money and used
it for household needs and for Maryann*s brothers and sisters. Maryann's brothers and sister would steal things from the house and
sell them; Maryann couldn't have anything of her own very long.  After a while, Maryann's siblings moved away or went to jail leaving
her  alone with her mother.  Maryann's mother died and Maryann didn't realize that she had passed; she was in the house a couple of
days before anyone realized her mother died. Maryann then went to live with her grandmother; who also died two years later. That is
when Maryann was placed with Youth Care Inc.

Maryann was amazed about her new apartment.  Before coming to Youth Care Inc., Maryann slept on a mattress on the floor; she
shared her room with a nest of baby mice. All of her clothes were too big and all dark colors; very depressing. Maryann had the money
to have nice things but no one bothered to help her. The first thing we did was to take Maryann shopping for her own bed and dresser.
We also shopped for new colorful clothes that fit. It seemed this was the first time Maryann went shopping for NEW clothes. Now she
loves to shop. Maryann says she wants to live with Youth Care & Beyond forever. She is healthy, has plenty to eat and enough money
to buy some of the things she enjoys. Maryann is happy and makes everyone around her feel the same.

Your donations to Youth Care goes directly to help clients like Mary Ann.
Youth Care & Beyond, Inc.'s program is specifically designed to address the unique and complex needs of Timothy and MaryAnn.

It takes time, patience, love and a well-designed program to overcome the obstacles of a disability, to unravel the threads of a mental illness and to heal the wounds
of abuse.

We would welcome the opportunity to speak with  you about how we can be of service.

“Youth Care has changed my
life.  I have made so much
progress here.”

"Without Youth Care I
would still be living in a
nursing home.  I'm 30 and
now I get to do what other
30 year olds do."
~ Current Client

“I work with state
wards and no one else
would take a youth on my
caseload.  I was
frustrated because my
client was sitting in a
locked facility for over 8
months. My client is now
at home with his family.
This is because of the
hard work Youth Care
did with him.”
